CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY AT BLOOR WEST SMILES

We help our littlest patients maintain strong, healthy teeth.

At bloorwestSmiles, we're proud to be a family-run dental practice in the heart of the Bloor West Village community, so it's pretty natural that we have a special interest in serving children and their families.

We thank you for choosing us to care for your child's dental needs. With over 20 years of dental experience West Toronto and Etobicoke dentist Dr. Kostirko is aware of the anxieties that children may have when visiting the dentist. He has experienced them all. From the child that jumps right into his chair and opens their mouth with excitement to the child that won't even walk through the reception door. Being a father himself, he understands that each child is unique and together with his clinical expertise and compassion he is able to care for their dental needs successfully.

Dr. Kostirko and his team understand the importance of establishing good oral hygiene practice early in a child's life. We believe that if children can have fun while developing positive dental habits, they will be more likely to have good oral health for the rest of their lives. Bloor West Smiles is committed to making this journey to a healthy smile, a relaxed, fun and enjoyable experience!

DENTAL TIPS FOR PARENTS

Children teeth anatomy

From an early age, your child should be taught the importance of maintaining good oral health. Below are some dental tips for parents that will help you.

  • Be the example for your child. It's what grown-ups do, and your child will want to imitate you.
  • When the first tooth erupts, clean it with a soft cloth. When back teeth come in, use a soft toothbrush.
  • Make cleaning your child's teeth a daily routine.
  • Floss the baby molars. At about age eight or nine, your child should have the dexterity to floss. Show him or her how to do it.
  • Find fluoridated toothpaste in a flavor that your child likes, and use only a pea-sized amount. Remind him or her not to swallow the toothpaste.
  • Commend your child for flossing and brushing. Tell your child how beautiful and clean his or her teeth look afterward.

Choose the right dentist. A dentist who does not love treating children or who pushes the child to have dental treatment can cause anxiety. Your child's long-term oral health is too important to permit bad experiences at the dentist's office.

YOUR CHILD'S FIRST VISIT TO THE DENTIST

Etobicoke children dentistry: maintain strong, healthy teeth

It's understandable that you might be a little anxious about your child's first dental appointment, but relax! Dr. Kostirko and his friendly team of hygienists love treating children. And our experience will help make your child's visit enjoyable.

We believe that your child's first visit to the dentist's office should not be for his or her own appointment - but yours. Let your child know that you're going to the dentist's office to get your teeth extra clean and to make sure that your teeth stay healthy and strong - and he or she can watch. Your child will see how the dentist cleans or works on your teeth. When you leave the dentist's office, your teeth are clean and beautiful, and you're happy! Watching you have these positive experiences will help your child look forward to his or her own dental appointment.

When your child is ready for an appointment, you are welcome to come into the exam room. You'll see that Dr. Kostirko loves treating children, and your child will sense it also. Your child's gums and teeth will be examined, and x-rays may be taken. Dr. Kostirko and his hygienists will talk to you about what you can do at home to help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums. We've reserved this time for you and your child, so don't hesitate to ask questions.

What if despite all of your preparation by setting the example at home and taking your child with you on your dental appointments, he or she doesn't want the treatment? If your child is uncomfortable, we will never push him or her to have the treatment. We'll be patient to see if your child is ready to proceed, and if not, we'll reschedule.

We want your child to have positive dental experiences. Maintaining good oral health is important, and positive experiences will help him or her become a good dental patient and not have dental anxiety or phobia.

Call us at 416-766-2853 to schedule an appointment for your child's first exam. If you would like to meet Dr. Kostirko first, and ask a few questions, you can request a complimentary consultation.
