Amazing Porcelain Veneers Result by Dr. Kostirko

Dental veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry in which a shell or layer of tooth-colored porcelain or composite material is placed over the facial surfaces of your teeth to correct worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, discoloration and chips or cracks.

Although dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create bright, white smiles with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth, they also protect the surface of damaged teeth and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Other benefits of veneers include durability, an improved smile appearance, and the need for little-to-no removal of tooth structure compared to crowns.

Dental implants are a life-changing and lasting solution for missing teeth. The greatest benefit of dental implants is that they look and feel like natural teeth. Unlike other tooth-replacement procedures, implants allow you to eat, talk and laugh with confidence. Not only do they replace the missing teeth, but the dental implants also preserve the supporting bone, making them the preferred choice over fixed bridges or removable dentures.

Implants preserve the integrity of the facial structure by preventing the bone resorption that would normally occur with the loss of teeth. This is particularly important when all of the teeth are missing, as the lower one-third of the face would collapse if implants were not placed to help preserve the bone!

Dental Implants can be like your third set of teeth. Best of all, they never get decay or need a root canal! So, whether to replace one missing tooth or to stabilize a loose partial or complete denture, dental implants are the strongest and the healthiest way to replace missing teeth. Most of all, dental implants can help stop bone atrophy, facial collapse and premature aging.

Tooth bonding, also known as dental bonding, is a common cosmetic procedure that can be used to improve the appearance of teeth that are:

  • Misshapen
  • Gapped
  • Crooked
  • Chipped
  • Affected by decay

Using a composite resin, Bloor West Smiles dentist Dr. Kostirko can painlessly correct these common issues with one, quick cosmetic procedure. Once hardened, the resin is durable and effective, giving you a beautiful, fully functional smile.

Your dental bonding procedure can be completed in a single office visit. Dr. Kostirko will start the process by roughing the tooth in order to provide an appropriate surface to which the resin can bond. Next, a thin layer of resin is applied to your tooth and hardened with a special curing light. Subsequent layers will be applied and cured until the resin has reached a consistency that is suitable for shaping and polishing.

The curing light hardens the resin in a matter of minutes, making this procedure one of the fastest ways to achieve the smile you desire. The resin comes in several shades and can be matched to your existing teeth, providing a seamless appearance.

Upon leaving the office, your teeth will be ready for use without any additional waiting time. This quick tooth bonding procedure will give you results that can last anywhere from seven years to an entire lifetime.

Tooth bonding is ideal for patients with small gaps in the front of their teeth. You can also benefit from a bonding procedure if you have teeth that are crooked or unevenly spaced. It is a good option if you have severe staining on your teeth which has not been responsive to tooth whitening procedures.

If you live in or around Toronto, Etobicoke or North York and would like to see if you are an ideal candidate for tooth bonding, please contact the experienced cosmetic dentist Dr. Kostirko at Bloor West Smiles today to schedule your initial consultation.

Dental Bridge Preparation

With a traditional bridge, healthy teeth on each side of the missing tooth are prepared for crowns.

Dental bridges are used to "bridge" gaps in your teeth. If you are missing a tooth or series of teeth, an all-porcelain dental bridge may offer the ideal solution. We place dental bridges that provide a natural appearance, reduce your risk of gum disease, and correct speech and bite difficulties. In addition, dental bridges eliminate the possibility that your remaining teeth will shift to fill the gap left by a missing tooth.

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges consist of a custom-made false tooth supported on either side by one or two porcelain crowns or composite bonding material. The dental bridge is used to aesthetically eliminate the gap left by a missing tooth, giving the patient a decade or more of comfortable wear and beautiful smiles.

Dental Bridge fused to 2 crowns

The custom-made artificial tooth is fused to 2 crowns. This is called a bridge.

There are several types of dental bridges, each chosen according to your needs and the location of the missing tooth:

  • With a traditional fixed bridge, the replacement tooth is held in place by two crowns, and the bridge is only removable by a dentist.
  • A resin-bonded bridge is ideal for front teeth and in situations when the surrounding teeth are healthy, with no large fillings.
  • Cantilever dental bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the gap.

The placement of dental bridges

Dental bridges, regardless of type, are placed in two visits. In your first appointment, we will prepare the teeth surrounding the gap, take an impression, and place a temporary bridge. The impression is used as a guide for the crafting of the bridge's false tooth and crowns. You will wear the temporary bridge until your next appointment, during which your permanent bridge will be cemented into place, fitted, checked, and adjusted.

With over 20 years of experience, you can be sure that all the dental bridges placed by Dr. Kostirko are long-wearing, completely natural-looking, and comfortable. That is our guarantee! To learn more about the advantages of dental bridges, contact our bloorwestSmiles office at 416-766-2853.

Dental crown to restore a damaged tooth

The final crown is cemented into place. It looks and works very much like a natural tooth

A crown, also called a "cap", covers the entire tooth surface to restore it to its original shape and size. If a tooth cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations, a crown is used to protect and strengthen the tooth structure.

While there are several types of crowns to choose from, porcelain crowns are the most popular as they most closely resemble your natural teeth in size, shape and color.

Tooth crowns are also an ideal solution for covering dental implants or helping to hold dental bridges into place. A strong and natural looking solution for restoring aesthetic beauty to your smile, your bloorwestSmiles cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kostirko may also suggest tooth crowns for the following reasons:

  • Broken or Fractured Teeth
  • Cosmetic Enhancement
  • Decayed Teeth
  • Fractured Fillings
  • Large Fillings
  • Tooth has a Root Canal

Porcelain tooth crowns offer the dual benefit of a cosmetically enhanced smile and restoring lost functionality, making them an ideal choice for many of our patients.

Your tooth crown procedure takes two office visits to complete. In order for us to provide you with a tooth crown that is both strong and perfectly matched to your adjacent teeth, we will need to first prepare your tooth to insert the crown.

During your first visit, Dr. Kostirko will reshape your tooth and remove any decay in order to allow your dental crown to be placed. After your tooth has been reshaped, we will take an impression of your tooth to send to our dental lab where your crown will be custom crafted.

Once your new tooth crown has been created and matched specifically to the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth, you will come back into the office to have your crown placed.

Tooth crowns are placed over your tooth, encasing your natural tooth in a protective layer of porcelain. Porcelain is stain-resistant, reflects light in the same way as your natural teeth, and provides renewed strength and durability while protecting your tooth from further decay and damage.

Please visit us at bloorwestSmiles, where we are proudly serving tooth crown patients in the Toronto and West Toronto communities.

Dentures are dental appliances that have been used for decades to replace missing teeth and gum tissue loss. Dentures are designed and created to look like your natural teeth and will also help to improve your smile. Dentures placed at bloorwestSmiles by Dr. Kostirko come in two different styles. These are full dentures and partial dentures.

Full dentures are used when all of your teeth are missing or have been extracted. Full dentures can either be "conventional" or "immediate" dentures. The conventional type of full dentures are created after the teeth have been removed and the surrounding gum tissue has had time to heal - usually a 4-6 week process. The creation of immediate dentures allows the placement of the denture immediately after the removal of the teeth and eliminates the waiting period for a patient. Adjustments to the denture are made after the gum tissue has healed. Dr. Kostirko explains to his patients which option is more suitable based on their individual needs.

Partial dentures are commonly used when many of your natural teeth are still present. Dr. Kostirko designs the partial denture to fill open spaces and gaps that are left with missing teeth and helps to keep remaining teeth from shifting out of alignment.

Common reasons for dentures

Partial dentures
  • Loss of all teeth
  • Loss of multiple teeth with few remaining teeth
  • To improve smile quality and face formation
  • To improve speech, eating and digestion

Procedure for full and partial dentures

The creation and placement of dentures requires several dental visits over the course of a few weeks. Dr. Kostirko takes impressions and measurements of your teeth and uses these to design your customized dentures. Having over 20 years of experience in the placement of dentures , Dr. Kostirko is able to accurately find the right fit, color and shape in order for your dentures to feel 100% comfortable and look like your own teeth when you smile. That is the Bloor West Smiles guarantee!

Please call Dr. Kostirko at Bloor West Smiles today, where we are proudly creating dentures for the Toronto, Etobicoke and South Kingsway communities.

Reasons for orthodontic treatment (braces) adults & children:

  • Breathing or swallowing problems - Mouth breathing can lead to snoring and sleep apnea.
  • Crossbite - One or more upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth (towards the tongue).
  • Crowding - Involving extra teeth or malpositioned teeth.
  • Deep Overbite - The lower front teeth bite into the upper tissue of the upper teeth.
  • Disfiguring of the face & mouth - Affects the development of the jaw and position of the teeth.
  • Jaw & jaw joint pain
  • Missing or extra teeth - Due to tooth decay, injuries, or inherited problems.
  • Overjet (protruding upper teeth) - Upper teeth that protrude beyond normal and are usually associated with a short lower jaw.
  • Self-image - An attractive smile can boost a person's self-image and confidence.
  • Spacing between teeth - Teeth are missing or may be too small or too large.
  • Speech, chewing or biting problems.
  • Underbite (lower jaw protrusion) - Lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw.

Specific to children:

  • Finger or thumb sucking- These habits can cause protrusion of the upper incisor teeth, and mouth breathing.
  • Teeth erupting out of position - Can be guided to proper alignment.

The benefits of orthodontic treatment often go beyond the obvious physical changes of an improved bite and straighter teeth; it's also a great way to improve a person's overall self-image. While having beautiful straight teeth is important, even more important is the need to alleviate any potential health problems associated with the teeth or jaw. Crooked teeth or jaw problems may contribute to improper cleaning of teeth, leading to tooth decay and, possibly, gum disease or total tooth loss. Orthodontic problems that go untreated can lead to chewing and digestion difficulties, speech impairments, and abnormal wear of tooth surfaces. Over time, excessive strain on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth can affect the jaw joints leading to problems such as headaches or face and neck pain.

Orthodontic treatment involves three phases:

1. Planning Phase - Your first couple of visits may include the following:

  • A medical and dental history evaluation.
  • Castings or "molds" of your teeth.
  • Computer generated photograph of the head and neck that will aid in planning.
  • Photographs of your face and mouth.
  • X-rays of the teeth and jaws.

After careful planning, Dr. Kostirko will design and apply braces or fabricate custom-made appliances for you.

2. Active Phase - Active treatment involves visiting Dr. Kostirko on a regular basis for adjustments and following specific treatment requirements to ensure successful treatment.

3. Retention Phase - When treatment is completed, the braces and/or appliances are removed and a new appliance is made. Usually these retainers are removable and will maintain the changes made to your teeth if worn continuously until the teeth and bone are stabilized in their new positions.
Treatment and retention times vary depending on each individual case. Dr. Kostirko will ensure you have a successful treatment for a beautiful smile that can last a lifetime.
