Toronto general dentistry for family

Restorative dentistry is basic repair of the mouth. At our Toronto West practice, we replace broken or leaking fillings, treat decayed teeth, build crowns and bridges, fit partial and full dentures, and realign your dental bite.

Our goal in restorative dentistry is a simple one: to help our Bloor West, Etobicoke and High Park patients keep all their teeth for a lifetime.

With his gift of combining artistry with science, Dr. Kostirko's Toronto patients are thrilled with the dramatic results he achieves with his restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

At bloorwestSmiles we can restore your teeth and mouth to full functionality and a healthy appearance whatever the level of existing damage. We use dental implants, dentures, crowns, inlays and onlays, and bridges to achieve total dental restoration.

Some of the restorative treatment options available include:

  • Bridges
  • Crowns
  • Dental Implants
  • Inlays and Onlays
  • Full and Partial Dentures

Dr. Kostirko will discuss the differences between these treatments with you and help you decide which option is best for you.

Dental Bridge Preparation

With a traditional bridge, healthy teeth on each side of the missing tooth are prepared for crowns.

Dental bridges are used to "bridge" gaps in your teeth. If you are missing a tooth or series of teeth, an all-porcelain dental bridge may offer the ideal solution. We place dental bridges that provide a natural appearance, reduce your risk of gum disease, and correct speech and bite difficulties. In addition, dental bridges eliminate the possibility that your remaining teeth will shift to fill the gap left by a missing tooth.

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges consist of a custom-made false tooth supported on either side by one or two porcelain crowns or composite bonding material. The dental bridge is used to aesthetically eliminate the gap left by a missing tooth, giving the patient a decade or more of comfortable wear and beautiful smiles.

Dental Bridge fused to 2 crowns

The custom-made artificial tooth is fused to 2 crowns. This is called a bridge.

There are several types of dental bridges, each chosen according to your needs and the location of the missing tooth:

  • With a traditional fixed bridge, the replacement tooth is held in place by two crowns, and the bridge is only removable by a dentist.
  • A resin-bonded bridge is ideal for front teeth and in situations when the surrounding teeth are healthy, with no large fillings.
  • Cantilever dental bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the gap.

The placement of dental bridges

Dental bridges, regardless of type, are placed in two visits. In your first appointment, we will prepare the teeth surrounding the gap, take an impression, and place a temporary bridge. The impression is used as a guide for the crafting of the bridge's false tooth and crowns. You will wear the temporary bridge until your next appointment, during which your permanent bridge will be cemented into place, fitted, checked, and adjusted.

With over 20 years of experience, you can be sure that all the dental bridges placed by Dr. Kostirko are long-wearing, completely natural-looking, and comfortable. That is our guarantee! To learn more about the advantages of dental bridges, contact our bloorwestSmiles office at 416-766-2853.

A crown, also called a "cap", covers the entire tooth surface to restore it to its original shape and size. If a tooth cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations, a crown is used to protect and strengthen the tooth structure.

While there are several types of crowns to choose from, porcelain crowns are the most popular as they most closely resemble your natural teeth in size, shape and color.

Tooth crowns are also an ideal solution for covering dental implants or helping to hold dental bridges into place. A strong and natural looking solution for restoring aesthetic beauty to your smile, your bloorwestSmiles cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kostirko may also suggest tooth crowns for the following reasons:

  • Broken or Fractured Teeth
  • Cosmetic Enhancement
  • Decayed Teeth
  • Fractured Fillings
  • Large Fillings
  • Tooth has a Root Canal

Porcelain tooth crowns offer the dual benefit of a cosmetically enhanced smile and restoring lost functionality, making them an ideal choice for many of our patients.

Your tooth crown procedure takes two office visits to complete. In order for us to provide you with a tooth crown that is both strong and perfectly matched to your adjacent teeth, we will need to first prepare your tooth to insert the crown.

During your first visit, Dr. Kostirko will reshape your tooth and remove any decay in order to allow your dental crown to be placed. After your tooth has been reshaped, we will take an impression of your tooth to send to our dental lab where your crown will be custom crafted.

Once your new tooth crown has been created and matched specifically to the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth, you will come back into the office to have your crown placed.

Tooth crowns are placed over your tooth, encasing your natural tooth in a protective layer of porcelain. Porcelain is stain-resistant, reflects light in the same way as your natural teeth, and provides renewed strength and durability while protecting your tooth from further decay and damage.

Dental implants are a life-changing and lasting solution for missing teeth. The greatest benefit of dental implants is that they look and feel like natural teeth. Unlike other tooth-replacement procedures, implants allow you to eat, talk and laugh with confidence. Not only do they replace the missing teeth, but the dental implants also preserve the supporting bone, making them the preferred choice over fixed bridges or removable dentures.

Implants preserve the integrity of the facial structure by preventing the bone resorption that would normally occur with the loss of teeth. This is particularly important when all of the teeth are missing, as the lower one-third of the face would collapse if implants were not placed to help preserve the bone!

Dental Implants can be like your third set of teeth. Best of all, they never get decay or need a root canal! So, whether to replace one missing tooth or to stabilize a loose partial or complete denture, dental implants are the strongest and the healthiest way to replace missing teeth. Most of all, dental implants can help stop bone atrophy, facial collapse and premature aging.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a permanent, surgical solution to replace missing teeth. Unlike dental bridges and dentures, a dental implant is surgically placed into your jawbone to provide a strong, secure foundation for your missing tooth.

Why should i choose dental implants as a tooth replacement?

Dental implants offer several advantages over other forms of tooth replacement. In addition to being permanent, dental implants do not require support from adjacent teeth, thus minimizing the impact to your natural, surrounding teeth. Dental implants also serve to strengthen your jawbone, preventing issues such as jaw collapse that can accompany dentures.

Why should i replace a missing tooth?

Missing teeth are both a functional and aesthetic issue. Missing teeth may cause an awkward looking smile, but the larger issue is what happens to the strength of your jaw and bite when a missing tooth is not replaced. When you are missing a tooth, adjacent teeth will eventually slide into its place, altering the strength and alignment of your bite. This can lead to uneven tooth wear and more serious issues such as jaw collapse.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are a good solution for most people. Ideal candidates should be in good general health, have sufficient jawbone density, and be prepared for the dental implant process, which can take several months to complete. If you do not have sufficient jawbone density, Dr. Kostirko can discuss bone grafting or alternative types of implants that may better meet your needs.

Are dental implants safe?

Dental implants are a safe and effective way to replace missing teeth. The surgical procedure has general risks such as infection and excessive bleeding, and the implant itself may be rejected by your body. These instances are rare, and great care is taken in the placement of your implant to help ensure against these complications.

Dentures are dental appliances that have been used for decades to replace missing teeth and gum tissue loss. Dentures are designed and created to look like your natural teeth and will also help to improve your smile. Dentures placed at bloorwestSmiles by Dr. Kostirko come in two different styles. These are full dentures and partial dentures.

Full dentures are used when all of your teeth are missing or have been extracted. Full dentures can either be "conventional" or "immediate" dentures. The conventional type of full dentures are created after the teeth have been removed and the surrounding gum tissue has had time to heal - usually a 4-6 week process. The creation of immediate dentures allows the placement of the denture immediately after the removal of the teeth and eliminates the waiting period for a patient. Adjustments to the denture are made after the gum tissue has healed. Dr. Kostirko explains to his patients which option is more suitable based on their individual needs.

Partial dentures are commonly used when many of your natural teeth are still present. Dr. Kostirko designs the partial denture to fill open spaces and gaps that are left with missing teeth and helps to keep remaining teeth from shifting out of alignment.

Common reasons for dentures

Partial dentures
  • Loss of all teeth
  • Loss of multiple teeth with few remaining teeth
  • To improve smile quality and face formation
  • To improve speech, eating and digestion

Procedure for full and partial dentures

The creation and placement of dentures requires several dental visits over the course of a few weeks. Dr. Kostirko takes impressions and measurements of your teeth and uses these to design your customized dentures. Having over 20 years of experience in the placement of dentures , Dr. Kostirko is able to accurately find the right fit, color and shape in order for your dentures to feel 100% comfortable and look like your own teeth when you smile. That is the Bloor West Smiles guarantee!

Please call Dr. Kostirko at Bloor West Smiles today, where we are proudly creating dentures for the Toronto, Etobicoke and South Kingsway communities.

When more than a third of a tooth's biting surface is damaged, Dr. Kostirko will often use an inlay or onlay. Large fillings on back teeth often require a stronger and properly contoured restoration, such as porcelain inlays or onlays. They are created at an off-site dental lab and are bonded into place using a strong resin. Inlays and onlays protect teeth similarly as crowns, but conserve more natural tooth structure and are matched to your tooth's natural color.

onlay inlay

They are a great alternative to traditional metal fillings, primarily because less of the tooth structure needs to be removed. Inlays and onlays are suitable for treating mild to moderate decay, and can be used to restore a cracked or fractured tooth if the damage is not extensive enough to require a crown.

Generally, inlays are small restorations that fit within the contours of the biting surface of a tooth, while onlays cover a portion or the entire chewing surface.

Inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, gold or composite resin. Once fabricated, they are securely bonded to the tooth.

Advantages of inlays and onlays

  • Since they can be fabricated from tooth-colored materials, inlays and onlays are aesthetically pleasing. Unlike traditional metal fillings, the restoration is virtually invisible.
  • Less removal of the tooth structure is required to achieve optimal results.
  • They do not cause excessive wear and tear to opposing tooth structures.
  • Inlays and onlays prevent the need for more significant treatment in the future.
