A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by Dr. Kostirko at your initial dental visit and at each subsequent visit. Regular exams are important to your dental and also overall health.Certain diseases may start or be seen first in the mouth. Dental exams are a part of early detection and prevention.

Your regular check-up exams include the following:

Examination of diagnostic x-rays

Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.

Oral cancer screening

Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Gum disease evaluation

Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.

Examination of tooth decay

All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.

Examination of existing restorations

Check current fillings, crowns, etc.

Professional dental cleanings, or dental prophylaxis, are usually performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

Removal of calculus (tartar)

Calculus and plaque are removed from your teeth. Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.

Removal of plaque

Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!

Teeth polishing

This removes stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling. You leave our office with a refreshed smile!

Dental x-rays are an essential, preventative, diagnostic tool that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dr. Kostirko uses this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas could go undetected.

Dental x-rays may reveal:

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line

At Bloor West Smiles we know that detecting and treating dental problems at an early stage may save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and your teeth!

Even though dental x-rays produce a low level of radiation and are considered very safe, we still take necessary precautions to limit your exposure to radiation. These precautions include only taking x-rays that are necessary and using lead apron shields to protect your body.

Going to the dentist for a filling is the most common restorative appointment.
Fillings are used as a solution to repair a tooth that has been affected by a cavity, fracture or crack. There are different types of materials available to fill a tooth. Together, you and Dr. Kostirko can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.

Composite fillings and silver amalgam fillings are the most widely used today. Because composite fillings are tooth-colored, Dr. Kostirko's technical expertise allows him to closely match the color of existing teeth, and they are more aesthetically appropriate for use in front teeth or the more noticeable areas of the mouth. The restorations are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.

Possible reasons for a filling:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Closing space between two teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth

Proper brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from the smooth surfaces of your teeth, but they often can't reach into the small pits and depressions on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth, allowing food particles and plaque to build up there. In these cases, we can provide a thorough cleaning and then apply dental sealants that will bond into the depressions, acting as a barrier to protect the enamel from plaque and other unwanted substances. This problem often begins early in life, so children and teenagers are especially good candidates for dental sealants, but adults can benefit from them as well.

Etobicoke root canal treatment

A root canal is often necessary to save or strengthen a diseased tooth

We know no one wants a root canal, but they are often necessary to save or strengthen a diseased tooth. At his Bloor West Smiles dental clinic, Dr. Kostirko has performed thousands of root canals throughout his 20+ years of practice. With his excellent skills and calm, gentle manner, Dr. Kostirko is able to make sure that his root canal procedures are as simple and painless as possible.

You may be facing a root canal, if you have experienced - or are experiencing - any of the following symptoms of infection:

  • Fever
  • Pain when chewing or eating
  • Sensitivity to atmospheric and/or food and beverage temperatures
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Foul odor to the breath
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • General discomfort, uneasiness or feelings of illness
  • Redness accompanied with a swelling of the gums
  • Swelling in the region(s) of the upper and/or lower jaw
  • An open, seeping or draining sore on the side of the gum

A root canal is performed as follows:

  • A sedative or local anesthetic is provided to the patient
  • The infected tooth is isolated from saliva and other contaminants by a dental dam
  • The crown of the tooth is opened to remove the infected pulp
  • The affected roots are cleaned and shaped and in some cases treated with medication to eliminate bacteria
  • A temporary filling is placed inside the crown to protect the tooth
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed in cases when the infection has spread beyond the roots
  • Another appointment is scheduled and the patient is given time to heal
  • The temporary filling is removed at the second visit
  • The root channel is permanently filled and sealed
  • A permanent filling or crown is used to restore the tooth

At bloorwestSmiles we have methods of helping even the most fearful of patients face their dental procedures with confidence and comfort. Call now to schedule an appointment at 416-766-2853.

Periodontics is the treatment of gum disease. Gum disease is an infection that can severely harm the gums and bone supporting your teeth. It can affect one tooth or many teeth.

Like any infection that can develop elsewhere in your body, left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious and costly health issues. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth.

Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone.

Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don't know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.

Etobicoke dentist explaining periodontal disease stages

Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease signs & symptoms:

  • Bleeding Gums
  • Loose teeth
  • New spacing between teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Red and puffy gums
  • Tenderness or discomfort

Periodontal disease treatment

At Bloor West Smiles Dr. Kostirko and his dental hygienist will evaluate your teeth for periodontal disease and recommend the appropriate treatment. Periodontal treatment methods depend upon the type and severity of the disease.

Periodontal disease progresses as the space between the tooth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque, and tartar, causing irritation to the surrounding tissues. When these irritants remain in the pocket space, they can cause damage to the gums and eventually, the bone that supports the teeth!

If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing will be recommended. In this procedure, tartar, plaque, and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line (scaling) and rough spots on root surfaces are made smooth (planing).

This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and pockets to shrink. If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean.
